Warranty?? Should I get it

Options
I am looking at buying a seat Leon 2019 with 6000 miles on the clock and 22 months left on the warranty. Motor point want to sell me an extended warranty on the car that will become active when the 22 month manufacturers warranty runs out.  The warranty they are offering is £489 for an additional 2 years.  To me that's quite expensive, and talking with someone from work today they told me not to bother as Seat is a reliable brand. His idea was to put £489 into a savings account and in the unlikely case that my car does have a fault I'd be better spending that money instead.

Will you even still own the car in 22mo time? I suspect that if it's been so unreliable that £245/yr sounds like good value, the answer will be "no".

You can always buy an extended warranty separately, if you feel you need one nearer the time.

I'd give it a swerve until you car is about to run out of it's manufacturer's warranty. Most 3rd party warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on, the only ones worth getting are manufacturer based warranties and they themselves can be expensive.

Regarding the warranty, you will be able to buy an aftermarket one, from a warranty company of your choice, in a couple of years time, if you wanted to. Probably at a comprable or better price.
However, I'd ask how come the car is in Motorpoint, instead of a main dealer and are you saving substantially enough to NOT buy fromn a main dealer and loose the chance of Seat offering 'goodwill' should problems occour after the standard warranty expires, assuming you maintain full main dealer servicing, which I would consider a prudent move.

  • Hi guys thanks for the reply, these sales men can be really pushy so I'm glad I'm doing the research prior and you guys are willing to help.

So the car is 2019 plate. To get the current 2020 version to match would be 19k so out of budget for me.

I think what I will do is wait out the 22 months. Once my warranty has ran out I will look online to see if any common faults are being logged and how expensive they are, also considering the cost/risk and decided from there.  I'm in 2 minds about getting it remapped after the 22 months anyhow so that will be the deal breaker.

I am grateful for your help.  Thanks you

I think the question you've overlooked was ... why is such a recent car at a car supermarket rather than a main dealer?

A very good question. Why won't the dealer chain retail it as an approved-used?

22 months left = 14 months old. Who buys a new car and sells it after just over a year and 6k miles...?

    Rental companies, for one.

Was it in store somewhere and missed the first service, voiding the manufacturer warranty?

This is a very good point.
From very recent experience car supermarkets they are very good at telling you the car has what remains of a manufacturer's warranty when in reality the car was an ex-rental which has never had a service other than the pdi, yet the car is 18 months old.
When that happens, not even the independent companies will sell you a  warranty because the car has not been maintained to the manufacturer's specifications.
I was amazed how often that was the case when I was looking for nearly-new not long ago.

There's no point buying extra warranty when you still have plenty of warranty left.
If you bought the car and just before the 3 year warranty expires, you still feel you need more warranty - then you can buy it then. There are various third party warranties and I'd wager that they would cost less than the £480 youve been quoted.
