Stuck in Madeira. easyJet offering no options and insurance refusing to pay.

Hi
My partner and I are in Madeira. Due to fly back to Manchester on Friday but flight was cancelled.
Spoke to easyJet and they haven't offered anything (other than a refund that I refused so that they're still responsible for us).
Spoke to insurance (through Nationwide FlexPlus account) and they have said that they have been told by the underwriters that they aren't paying out for these situations.
So...my options seem to be:
1. Wait for easyJet to find a way to get their passengers back home. Presumably they are responsible for all costs until that time? But I can't take loads of time off work and it feels like it could be ages. What can I actually claim back? Presumably accommodation, but how about food, clothes, lost time at work etc.? And what if easyJet go bust?
2. Book flights myself which will be several hundred pounds, plus extra costs for getting back home.
3. Anything else?
Thanks!

Reg 261 compensation still applies this year. Are there suitable alternative flights?0

If it were me I'd be pursuing option 2 in a heartbeat. What's a few hundred quid versus lost earnings and all the other costs you've listed?1

I would be getting out as soon as possible by any means necessary and then worry about the cost later. That's why even with travel insurance, a credit card is still the most useful travel accessory. Looks like TAP are still flying to Manchester via Lisbon but who knows for how long.1

Thanks all. I've booked those flights with TAP for 110euros each and fly back tomorrow.
Fingers crossed the insurance company will change their mind and I can claim them back at a later date as I really see no reason why they would refused to pay for my scenario.
Thanks again.0 -
Thanks for this Patricia. I've booked alternative flights.patricia1066 said:Reg 261 compensation still applies this year. Are there suitable alternative flights?
What kind of compensation should I expect through reg 261? And how would I go about claiming?0 -
Nothing. The people telling you this is covered by the EU regs are woefully misinformed.potatosalad said:patricia1066 said:Reg 261 compensation still applies this year. Are there suitable alternative flights?

The duty of care under EU261 still applies irrespective of the reasons for the delay, you cannot claim the fixed level of compensation on top. So on the easyjet website, there is a claim form for out of pocket expenses in relation to accommodation (not the Savoy) and food, not alcohol, for the days you were delayed0

Yes that what I meant, you haven't a hope in hell of getting the €300 (or whatever it is) compo delay payment.0
