Hi I have a 2nd Generation Smart Meter. Can someone explain to me what is the process if I switch energy providers, how does the new provider connect to my existing smart meter? Is it a difficult/laborious process? Does it require call-out? Or can it be done remotely in a matter of seconds?

You switch energy providers in exactly the same way as you did before, it up to them to work out how to enroll your meter into their system.
Some suppliers will have a process and some others are still working on it and it could take a year or more until it all works as it should.

Ideally if it's a 2nd Gen meter that's already enrolled on to the DCC then it should be a relatively simple process because its the DCC that collects the data and farms it out to the supplier. However it does require that both the supplier's (the leaving one and gaining one) have a process in place to transfer the data from one to the other and not all have, so it would probably depend on who you are with at the moment and who you are transferring to.

In the end it really wont make any difference, you wont need to have a meter change or a visit but you may have to start sending in readings if you new supplier doesn't collect them automatically.

You should be checking that your existing supplier is correctly collecting readings anyway.

This is the most important part of the post - innumerable examples of customers sitting back with their Gen 2 smart meters assuming all was well -then finding that they were never set up correctly in the first place - and they have been getting estimated bills!!
