Protecting carpet during decoration

Spring is at the door and I'm looking to spruce the place up. I've been wanting to get a walk-in wardrobe fitted in the spare room for some time now. My vision is to have plasterboards with a door and some shelves. I never ever let shoes into the house. Now my challenge is keeping my carpet clean whilst the decoration is going on and having workmen in will mean them coming in and out of the house with shoes.
Are there any ways that might be recommended for protecting my carpet? I'd like to protect it from germs and dirt from the outside. I once tried to use one of those cling film rolls, but I found it something of a challenge to use. Maybe I was going it wrong. How do people protect their carpets when having workmen in?

Roll & stroll or equivalent and dustsheets. The builders should be putting them down not you.

Given up on trying to protect carpets from messy trades. I'm leaving the old ones down and will replace once I'm done making a mess.

Have the requirement to protect all carpets part of the contract with the decorators.  They will be (or should be) used to protecting furnishings when they are working.

I've actually read this somewhere. The last time I tried to use it, I was doing it on my own. I might need to ask my siblings for help.

  • Hello. Just please be a little careful with sticky cling film. We are carpet cleaners and unfortunately couple of time we had to clean up carpets, when sticky cling film has been left for to long. Not sure, what is worse, decorators and builders that don't bother to cover carpets at all (at least we know what to expect :) ) or that sticky cling film. The problem is that all glue has been transferred to a carpet and as soon as it's been removed it started to absorb dirt extremely fast. We managed to remove that in many cases, but to be honest it took a lot's of heat. I'm not sure exactly for how long it's safe to keep that film on a carpet, but from our experience if you keep it for too long, it would be a nightmare. In one of cases when we tried to walk on carpet, shoes literally stuck to a carpet  ;)   Worst case scenario - you can always use carpet cleaners later on :) . Good luck!

We are currently going through decorating our house. We are just using old bed sheets as dust sheets to protect the one year old carpets and they seem to be doing a great job.
