I use a rule for these situations.. is it so stained/dirty etc that I cant/wont wear it?.... if it is then I cant loose anything by trying washing....

Looking at the material I would imagine it would be ok to wash as long as it doesnt have any fancy stitching or fabric coating (is it waterproofed)

Having said all that I would certainly try washing it on a very low delicates wash & allow it to 'drip' dry...I ruined a lovely embriodered(sp?) Kimono once.... it washed fine but then like a twit I tumble dried it & all the stitching shrunk!

  • Can't you return it to the cleaners? Surely if they were meant to clean it and it hasn't come back clean you're within your rights to have them finish the job?!

I agree with the previous post but how about taking it back to the dry cleaners and saying you aren`t very happy with the result and could they redo it?

I've washed a cream duffel coat several times. Though it stated Dry Clean Only, my local cleaners were reluctant to do it as it had faux leather toggles.
It has washed very well using cheap bio powder, no conditioner. I line-dried it on a coat-hanger, to keep it's shape.

I think it is the wool content that makes it dry clean and so if you wash it as wool it should be okay. If you have a hand wash option on your machine it may be helpful or even a wool logo option.
I washed the kids wool coats by machine and line dried them and they came out fine. Make sure there are no brightly coloured things that could bleed into the white eg.linings, sewn in labels or wooden or leather buttons else that would stop you being able to do it.

Not sure if this is in the right place but my coat has a dry clean only label on it(i would never have bought it if i had known this) it says on the label that it is 51% polyester 25% acrylic and 24 % wool this is the only coat i have and i dont have a local dry cleaning service in my area my washing machine has a hand wash and wool program on it but i dont know which one to use any tips for me please.

I have no local dry cleaning either so I know the problem. If it were my coat, I'd carefully wash it in the bath, with some pure soap flakes or Woolite. I have done that with lots of dry-clean only items, and it is usually fine. However if it is a big coat it will then be a problem to get it dry - you may need to spin it briefly in the machine, but in that case wrap it in something like an old curtain or bath sheets to protect it.
