Name on flight ticket different to passport

Hello. My adult son Alexander has a passport in this name,but his mate has booked holiday flights in shortened name of Alex through booking.com who wont change it. I've contacted airlines who wont change either. 1 anyone flown with similar stories, 2 should he just change it by deed poll and get new passport. Thanks in advance for any similar stories.

had he booked direct with the airline, chances are they could have fixed it for free within 24 hours of booking. As it is a third party booking (will be gotogate) he is likely going to be told that needs to buy a new ticket
Where are they due to travel to and when? if the airline if offering cancellation waivers he may be able to cancel and start again (losing whatever the gotogate admin fees are)0
