Hi folks,
Could someone who is familiar with FTTP and the Openreach ONT please confirm that if the LOS light on the ONT is red then there is a fault somewhere in the network, or the optical cabling, or the actual ONT itself, and that this red light doesn't indicate a fault in my ethernet cable that leaves the ONT to the WAN point on the router?
Also if FTTP cable, is just a continuation of the same optical fibre cable that brings it to the cabinet, and only the copper bit to the premises is replaced, or FTTP is a totally separate cable between the exchange in the homes totally bypassing the FTTC cabinets?
Many thanks for any help.

FTTP is fibre all the way to the premises and doesn't touch FTTC cabinets at all AFAIK.1

Openreach optical network terminator PON light is off, LOS or optical light is redBroadband isn't working. Check that your fibre cable is firmly plugged in and isn't damaged.
Check cables running into the box are seated correctly .

Thanks for replies, still off, so will have to report it tomorrow, at least I have still have broadband with my old FTTC connection.
Which probably for me anyway raises the question, isn't reliability more important than actual speed?
I would image when FTTP comes to an area through Openreach and there is a slow take up, compared to maybe the existing FTTC where a majority of users are on, there might be more urgency on Openreach's part to fix any faults in FTTC first.0 -
Not the way OR works as your ISP puts the repair in the OR queue.FTTP will have less fault areas than FTTC as its new clean optical cabling exchange to ONT .FTTP is far far more reliable than FTTC .Probable fault area will be cable into users home .Be aware if its a user fault charge is £135- £175 .1

OP,
I had the dreaded LOS light appear on my Openreach ONT last year. The LOS light basically indicates there isn't enough light coming through the fibre to the ONT, so unlikely to be a problem in your home unless the ONT itself is faulty. In my case, i reported the issue to my ISP, who got Openreach to send out an Engineer. He traced the fibre all the way back to the exchange, measuring light loss at various points on the PON as he went along. In the end he didn't find anything physically wrong with the fibre itself, but as a last resort he did a re-config of the exchange FTTP card and that fixed the issue.
