Bathroom renovation

Hi, we're having the bathroom done after about 15 years of use (it's a very small one, 1700mm x 1600mm off the top of my head). We originally had a bath tub but now considering a 1200mm shower tray because the tub was barely used and generally made a mess when it did.

I've been to a few local bathroom stores that stock some good quality stuff. However getting a quote for the shower tray + enclosings, toilet, sink + cupboard, ventilation fan,  single lighting fixture + a thermostatic shower total comes to about £2000. Went B&Q/wickes and everything just felt flimsy so not much less.

Now looking at websites like victoriaplumbing and bathstore/bathroomtakeaway, they have suites for £400-500 all in. Even if I go for individual bits its a bit cheaper. Just wondering what everyone else did for the bath renovation? Feels a bit off ordering big units off the internet but the savings make it seem worthwhile. Any suggestions how I can get a good deal on the shower/tray+enclosings/bog/basin?

Oh and in case anyone has been on the fence with deciding between the shower and tub, what did you choose? I think the tub will be mostly redundant, but that off day once in a couple of months makes it seem worth it. But again we don't want to deal with water splashing, as the leak we've dealt with has been awful! (+costly)

cheers

A well fitted bathroom doesn't leak, so I'm not sure that should be a consideration when choosing bath v shower.  If you do pick a shower, pick a solid stone resin tray.   Having a separate shower valve over a bath makes the experience of showering in one a much better one.

Victoria Plumbing isn't a website.  VictoriaPlumb sell substandard moving parts which will not last anything near 15 years, Victorian Plumbing sell a wide range of stuff that definitely includes quality items.

If you're unsure, then I'd look at the length of guarantees on products to see how sure they are of their own quality.  It's pretty easy to find 10 year guarantees.

I bought Mira shower stuff from Plumbnation. Delivery was a problem, but the price was good, and the stuff arrived eventually. Mira was good enough quality for me.

I prefer surface mounted shower valves, rather than burying them under the tiling. Likewise, a shower head mounted on a rail. That way all the bits that are most likely to break can be very easily replaced. It may not have quite the same wow factor, but it’s very practical.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
