Refunds to ‘original payment method’ only?

I paid on my credit card for a once in a lifetime (I.e. expensive) cruise holiday for my friend and I. It now looks as if we’ll have to cancel but I don’t want the money refunded to my credit card as I can’t then pay my friend her share and I certainly don’t want that amount of money sitting there as a credit balance on the card! Surely I must be able to ask for a bank transfer instead - what happens when people swop cards and don’t have their original one at all?

Any refund by the holiday company would go to your credit card but in turn your credit card provider should be able and willing to return this large one-off credit to your bank account for you to do what you want with it from there.

Are you saying your card will have a credit balance after the refund?  I only ask because some card issuers will usually refund credit balances to the bank account nominated on the credit card account.  If they did refund the credit balance to your nominated bank account, then you would be able to make a onward transfer to your friends account.

Who is the card issuer?  Have you contacted the issuer to check what they will do with the credit balance?

That is absolutely what will happen

The refund will be made to your credit card as stated above

you will then have the option of calling the card company and asking for that money to be transferred to your bank account

It has to go back to the same payment method because it's an anti-money-laundering measure. Once it's there you can get the money out in other ways like a cheque or asking the card issuer to transfer it to your bank.
