Can a wedding venue charge a fee for paying on credit card

I’m looking at booking my wedding and the venue are saying that there is a surcharge for paying on credit card. I thought these charges had been banned? Can they charge me extra for using one?

    No, they can't.

Or rather, they can, but it's not allowed.

To expand on the above answer, they're not allowed to levy a surcharge if the payment is with a personal (not a business) card and if the venue is in the EU (or has been up to recently!), although some EU states still haven't finished implementing the relevant directive.

If you want to cite the relevant legislation, it's the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012, as amended by paragraph 12 of Schedule 8 to the Payment Services Regulations 2017. The amendment took effect from 13 January 2018.

The amendment took the form of inserting a new regulation 6A which, broadly speaking, prohibits the charging of a fee when payment is made by card.

Both sets of regulations can be found online at www.legislation.gov.uk if you want to read them for yourself. You'll need to look at both, because the earlier ones don't have the amendments included in them.
