Cistern replacement / repair query

Options
Hi, I have a leaking toilet (water leaking into the bowl after flushing). I have been advised that I will need a whole new cistern, as the alternative of replacing parts of it (I assume a syphon and/or fill valve based on my limited knowledge) "may not 100% work". This is a fairly new cistern (only 2 years old) and this is the first issue I've had so this seems a bit of a stretch to me? Am I correct in thinking this? This is without the plumber even looking inside the toilet to properly assess what is wrong with it.

Kind regards,
David

Absolute nonsense, get a new Plumber
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Can you not have a look and figure out what is happening?
Usually the ball !!!!!! isn't rising far enough to stop the water flow so it is rising and overflowing into the toilet.
Usually it will just need a few turns of the screw to fix it.
  • Thanks both - appreciate the help. I'm opening it up shortly (requires lifting off a couple of tiles) so hoping I can figure it out. Had a few other quotes which seem much more reasonable and none have suggested replacing the cistern.

Couldn't agree more. Toilet cisterns use pretty standard components inside, and suitable replacements can be purchased from the likes of Screwfix for very little. In fact, some replacement parts are better than the original.
Replaced the fill valve on my toilet after the original started to sound like a fog horn every time the loo was flushed. The replacement is much more compact, quieter refill than the original ever was. and much easier to adjust.

Thanks all for the advice. Pleased to say another plumber performed a simple fill valve replacement instead (watched a few Youtube videos and decided not to do it myself as my cistern is a bit fiddly being a concealed cistern). Much better educated on toilets after this incident at least!

Can't believe the original plumber has such high ratings on Checkatrade (probably a sign I should steer clear of that website!).
