What is the right date to give notice?

We pay our rent the 25th of every month, having originally moved in on the 25th back in 2017.  We were quite content to carry on with a rolling contract, however our landlord wanted to re-mortgage the house last year and to do this we were asked to sign a new AST (to help him get the mortgage) this AST ends on the 12th April 2020.  We are buying a house and need to give our 1 months notice.
Do we:
A. Give our notice on the 25th of this month to fall in line with our rent payment and original contract.
B. Give notice tomorrow to end our tenancy on the 11th April 2020.
I think its A personally but I just wanted to make sure I'm doing the right thing (we complete on the 27th March so either date suits us)
Thanks

Your fixed term ends on 12th April. Provided you move out on or before the 12th you do not need to give any notice. It's a fixed term. When the end date comes, the tenancy ends (unless you stay!).
Of course, it is polite, and helpful both to you and the landlord, to discuss your plans and give him a heads up that you will be leaving, but that is a practical/diplomatic matter - not a legal one.
If you want to end the tenancy earlier, that is also possible if you discuss it with the LL, and provided he agrees.

Many thanks for your reply.  I had assumed the notice period would be 1 month from rental payment so the 25th to 24th.  Is that over-ridden by the AST that was put in place? I've rented 4 different places but I've never had this issue before so I'm a bit confused.

    Well your assumption is wrong.
You signed a fixed term contract that ends on 12th April. On that date, therefore, your contract ends.

What stage is this at?  It is never advisable to give notice until you have exchanged contracts even if this means there is an overlap between renting and owning.

    and you Exchanged.. when?
Not that it makes a difference. You are tied in till 12th April unless the LL agrees an earlier date.
