Supermarkets wont run out, they have massive warehouses of stock. The British Retail Consortium has said no need to panic buy.

I know there is a good chance some of my tenants will through no fault of their own hit harder times in the coming months, and like any decent landlord I will do all I can to help, even if that means letting them off a few weeks or even a months rent at some point.
But I also know that some tenants are going  to abuse the help that is being offered to them, I am already in my own head know the first two tenants  who will be the first to contact me and possibly try it on. All I can say is they had better watch their step, could come a day when they will really need help

Just In Time delivery means that shops don't carry huge warehouses of stock relative to the stuff they sell. It may look like a lot but it's probably only a couple of days worth of anything, everything else is wasted money. A rush or delay in anything will take a while to catch up, which is why people are so keen to avoid disruption with Brexit.

I noticed today that Home Bargains no longer have shelf space for hand sanitisers and similar products - they're re-used the shelf space for other products. They're obviously not expecting to restock those products anytime soon.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

SWMBO works in a shop.  The shelves are bare of essentials.  Sales are only up 21%  So if this is typical the average shop cannot cope with a 20% increase in demand.  I suspect the increase in demand (were the stock to be there to buy) is more like 100%

The "problem" is we are being told to get ready to self isolate, and also being told not to stock up on food.  Okay if that's what you want then just WHAT is your plan to feed all these self isolating people then?  In the absence of clear guidance, people make their own plans.

In china people were allowed out to shop.
If people self isolate then food deliveries can be made to their doorstep.

the shops should just stop serving people who are bulk buying, not just ask nicely.

Re supermarkets... they won't run out of food ... and if there's a run on it they'll cut out non-essentials and just ramp up supply of essentials.  e.g. instead of selling 12 varieties of Heinz beans the Heinz factory would just make one variety ..... because you can produce more if everything's geared to one thing.

Variety slows down production, creates logistics problems and wastes up more  warehouse space.

It's in the plan - adjusting what foods are produced/stocked to minimise variety to ensure everybody's fed.

Worst case scenario: A few people might be horrified that their Smashed Avocado on Artisan Bread slices are unavailable... but there will be plenty of the National Loaf on the shelves: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Loaf

There is a problem for those self isolating. It is impossible to get online delivery from the major players in under a two/three week period. Some are not registering new customers.
