Thank you all, it's really helpful to hear how you have found the different cars to drive and to run.  Should help me break the corsa/polo mould!
  • I can't believe someone has said the Ford ecoboost engine is good! This is very dangerous advice for a money saving site. Much better to go with the 1.25 engine on a fiesta.
For older cars I would go Yaris, Fabia or Jazz.

I have to agree with this...yes they fixed the coolant issues on a few thousand cars but am curious how durable the they will be with time esp after a few years of miles being piled on. I don't have faith they will be as reliable as the older N/a petrol engines..more efficient yes but not more reliable.

the ecoboosts are fine. The only problems they've had have all been covered by recalls which cost you the consumer / driver nothing.

If going for an "older" car I would suggest getting something Japanese?

£2.5k plus will buy you a Seat Mii or Skoda Citigo 74/75hp engine if you hunt one down (not the common 60hp).
Ignore the stats that tell you it takes 13 seconds to 60, it's nippier than that and a real hoot to drive plus they're deceptively spacious inside.
It'll cope with your hill (so long as it's not Ben Nevis), it's economical (over 50 average mpg, cheap servicing & great engine too) and cheap to insure & tax to boot.
Which all add up to why our household has one one its fleet.
