Cancelling A Gym Membership

Hi all, I've been a lurker for a while but this is my first question so thanks in advance.

I've just joined a gym.  I went and had a look around beforehand and spoke to one guy and it seemed like a good place.  I've since had my 'induction' and I am less than impressed.  I wont go into the reasons why but in short, the feel of the place just isn't for me and I don't think I will get what I need.  The gym is also on the pricey side.

I signed up for 6 months, and here's the crucial element, I did this online after I had got home.  I've checked the T&Cs and it seems that they don't offer a cooling off period but when checking with the Citizens Advice website it seems that there is a 14 day cooling off period enshrined in law for when agreements are signed for online, which doesn't apply to agreements signed for 'on-premise' as it were.

Does anyone know the ins and out of this?

Was the induction after you signed up?
  • Yes. I should add that I am happy to pay for this 'induction' which was incredibly poor and one of the reasons I want to cancel.

The fact that you paid for the membership and undertook the induction to me would say that the contract is now in action and you have negated your rights to the 14 day cooling off period.
  • When I say 'induction' it wasnt really carried out properly, I wasnt told what to bring or prepare and so it wasnt really effective.

What did you need to bring? Every induction i've gone to is gym wear and a pair of trainers.

That's somewhat beside the point, you can't exercise a cooling off period now the service has started and you've made some use of it.

Have you asked the gym if you can cancel, giving feedback on why you want to?  They may simply agree or perhaps offer you a discount or perhaps a shorter introductory period to persuade you to stay on.

On a related note, I wonder how long it will be before threads appear asking if a Gym Contract can be broken because of fears pertaining to Covid-19????

Or more seriously, who bears the risk of gyms being temporarily told to close, or particular facilities put out of use.
