What happens if one person pays for a family holiday that is subsequently cancelled?

My Mum has paid for flights and a villa so that all her family can be together this summer. Each family has holiday insurance, as has Mum. Where does she stand if we have to cancel the holiday? Would each person need to contact their respective insurers and how do they stand with a claim as they have not actually paid? Any help/advice please?

Cancellation for what reason?Insurance policies don't cover you deciding you don't want to go.0

If the holiday is cancelled by the operator, the bill-payer (your mum in this case) will receive a refund. If you choose not to go, insurance won't cover that.
Has your mum booked a package, or are the flights and accommodation separate? If the latter, it could get complicated if flights are cancelled.1 -
This could get very messy. Assuming a couple out of the group couldn't travel because of illness, I'm not sure how their insurance would view someone else having paid as presumably they've been gifted the holiday so aren't technically out of pocket. Just a thought.
Obviously insurance is needed in case of illness etc while away.1 -
Since booking the holiday, flights and villa are separate, Mum, who’s 87, has fallen and fractured her shoulder and is quite poorly. We hope she will improve enough to be able to travel but at this stage I’m purely fact finding. Appreciate all your comments.0

You might be covered, check the policy, they often cover inability to travel due to medical reasons of a travelling companion, or illness of a close relative, so 2 angles to look at.

Why not speak to the insurer.abbie1 said:Since booking the holiday, flights and villa are separate, Mum, who’s 87, has fallen and fractured her shoulder and is quite poorly.
