Card cancelled in 14-day cooling off period

Hi,
I opened then closed an Amex Card back in December within the 14 day cooling off period.

My understanding is that there should be no record of this on my credit files, however the search is still there, along with the account being opened on my credit files for a period longer/different that it was actually open for.

I opened it on the 9th December, closed it on the 11th December, but the CRA's (all 3) are reporting it opening on the 9th December (correct) and closing on 20th February (incorrect).

Can someone confirm what is correct when it comes to cards being closed within the 14 day cooling off period and what should and shouldn't be shown on your credit files.

Thanks.

  • In my opinion the search should remain. The card is not on your file because you cancelled it. But a search has no relation to whether you actually kept the product or not. It shows you have applied.

Similar to if you apply and get rejected for a product, the search remains and is like a double whammy but this is how it has always been.

It depends on whether you closed it or withdrew from the agreement.

if you open an account with a company i think they have to keep records for about 6 years . Make a subject access request to see what they have on you

My exact message to them was “I wish to exercise my right to cancel this card and agreement under the 14 day cooling off period”.

I would expect it to still show as having been opened and closed

That is what happened with a Luma card I had for a few days. They had a card offer with cashback, but the offer didnt track and mine came without, they couldn't add it on, so we closed that and I reapplied.

My understanding, from looking at previous posts, was that it was cancelled as if it never existed in the first place.
    Therefore, no reference to it
