council house policies

Hello all
I have a share ownership mortgage (2 BED ROOM FLAT). I have 4 children and my partner as well. I have tried all possible means to get a 3 or 4 bedroom house but it has not
been possible. my self and my partner salaries cannot afford it. is it possible to get a property from council. i dont mind to give my flat to the council. any advice will be useful.also one of our children is autistic. The flat is very small and it has been challenging to live with all the children in a crowded enviroment

I wouldn't have thought it was very likely but you are better off asking the council themselves.  Each council has different policies.  You have nothing to lose at this point if you ask them.  Just keep pointing out how overcrowded you are and how your autistic son in particular is affected.  Be aware that gatekeeping exists (where councils give false information to put applicants off).

Most councils will have their housing policies online, try googling for your council's housing policies.

I would think that it is very unlikely as you are not homeless and you could in fact sell the flat and buy a bigger one.  It is also unlikely that your council will have a house to give you and would probably only be able to offer you another flat.

Home ownership is usually a  automatic no for the council list unless for sheltered accommodation.

How long has your flat been on the market for and what's it worth?
  • If you sold the flat could you rent a big enough house?  Could you manage if you moved to a cheaper area?

My own share of the flat is 92, 000 pounds. there is still a mortgage of 40,000 pounds to be paid. so the amount I will realized is about 50, 000 pounds. I have tried to sell the flat but our salaries and the deposit is not enough secure a mortgage of 3 /4 bedroom flat.  Like I wrote in my previous post, I dont mind if the council will take my flat.

I don't think the council will do anything because you are not homeless and you could privately rent somewhere if you wanted a bigger flat.  I don't know where you live but many councils don't have enough properties to house people who have nowhere to live at all.

You would be best places to contact the council directly regarding this. However on the face of it I don’t think your chances of gaining a place will be successful especially since it’s a mortgaged property. 4 children in a 2 bed flat isn’t ideal but the council would still deem you as having a roof over your head even if it isn’t the most suitable of properties.

@onwards&upwards is suggesting you sell your current home and rent something more suitable, not buy a larger home.

Council are not going to take your flat in return for a Council house. This would be bribing yourself to the top of the waiting list, very strict rules against this.

You are lowest priority, a couple in secure accommodation = no accommodation need. They likely won't accept you on to the list and if they did it would be lowest priority with a 5+ year wait and a condition you sold your flat.

How much is the monthly rent of a 3 or 4 bed property in your area?  Where in the country do you live?
