Claiming on critical illness cover

4.5 years ago my wife had a serious heart attack and only just survived and was off work for months. Going through some paperwork today she found out she took out critical illness cover with her life insurance. My question is this, is it too late now to make a claim?

  • You usually have to claim in 6 months, but would be worth a call to your insurer

I wouldn't expect a claim to be declined purely because it was outside of the time limits suggested.  For example, your wife could have had a stroke and not been able to communicate that she had a critical illness policy.  Get a claim submitted and if questioned just explain that you weren't aware that you had critical illness and someone suggested checking.
  • Hi did you have any success with this as we have just found out my husband could have claimed for his diabetes 2 years ago and when we were sold it he was pretty much told he could only claim for cancer etc. so it was never a thought

The time limits are only given to get people to speed up.   People have claimed years later without issue.   However, the longer you leave it, the harder it becomes as records may disappear and tests may not be possible

check the T+C of the CI cover, they sometimes grade the heart attack according to the Troponin level, a blood test done in hospital

It would be unusual for diabetes to be covered on a critical illness plan, unless your husband has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
