Use of MS Office online for free?

I've been told it is possible to access MS Word etc online at no cost.
I have a Word document which I want to amend and do not have MS Office installed on my laptop (one-month was installed by seller about a year ago!).
I can see that with a Microsoft account I could access a one-month trial option but have to provide payment details to cough up £80 afterwards. I don't want to pay annually as I prefer to pay once for however long I need it.
Do you think the person who told me about setting up an MS account for free access mean the one-month trial? (I can't check with them!)
ETA: When I open the Word document there is a click box marked "Use free at Office.com" but when I follow that lead I cannot see how to use Word without signing up for the trial and then payment.

You need to have an MS account to log into https://office.live.com/start/Word.aspx, but this does not involve a trial. It may be worth looking at other options such as those in https://www.lifewire.com/use-microsoft-word-for-free-4134139.

If you cant open your doc then you could install the free LibreOffice and try that.0

If you have any of the following you already have a Microsoft account, you should be able to sign into any of them and get access to the online Office:Outlook, Office, Skype, OneDrive, Xbox Live, Bing, Store, Windows, or MSN. Also any account generated through Windows 10 if it was on the internet when you set it up.Note that Office through the browser isn't as featured or powerful as full blown Office but it's functional.
