I need a mule card!

  • Hi k-rolls

Personally I'd be inclined to proceed on the basis that it'll be treated as a balance transfer rather than a money transfer and apply for the card.

However, as Yorkshire Boy says, do the balance transfer over the phone so you can make absolutely certain that you'll be charged the £50 capped BT fee and that the transaction will not be treated as a money transfer. Make sure you take the name and extension number of the customer services advisor and make a note of the call time, so you have comeback if there is a problem.

Somehow that all sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is!
  • Thanks for the advice tipsychick - I'll probably try that out, and if I do I'll update on how I got along in this thread.
  • Thanks all, just tried, didn't work, will have to leave it a few months and give it another go :(

Well, I just got the Virgin Atlantic card, and according to the helpdesk person I spoke to on the phone, I can use the balance transfer facility to transfer to a standard bank account rather than to another card (I didn't check whether this was also at 0%, but I'm assuming it is, because she termed it a 'balance transfer'). Assuming this applies to all MBNA cards (which may not necessarily be the case, but I'm assuming that the person I talked to works for MBNA as the number was listed in their communications rather than Virgin's), it seems to be possible to transfer out from a 0% interest MBNA card to a standard bank account without going through the intermediary of the Egg Money card.

This may be old news for some - I hope it saves someone time in the future though.
  • Hi again zcrar70

You're right. Like Egg Money, MBNA offer a super balance transfer facility (SBT) which allows you to transfer the money direct to your bank a/c. Very useful!

It should be treated exactly the same as any other balance transfer and capped at £50.00 but do check with the CSA before you do it and take a note of their name, extension no. and time of call.
  • just as an aside, tipsychick makes the useful point about Egg and perserverance. I was declined and followed it up with a well-worded letter explaining my fin. position in greater detail. I sent it 'to be signed for' and phoned 2 days later to check it had been rec'd. this overal approach adds impact to your application. a week later - bingo! the acc. was opened. I know of 3 other people who have done ditto with ditto results.

    hope this helps.
