OP send him the quote for your repairs and instruct him to forward it on to his insurer otherwise you will start legal proceedings.
But thisd would have been so much easier if you had gone through the motions with the insurance company, not letting them take it away anywhere and then paying them the salvage value.
This whole issue is of your own making and perhaps the insurer has closed his book on the case but there might still be a little hope, if you are lucky.
Assuming the car was worth say £1k I would have received that money bought it back for a couple of hundred quid had the car repaired and been up £500 on the deal. But each to their own.1
