I don't understand why some companies appear to encourage and protect the gossipy/just chatting all day types, that do the least amount of work as possible, whilst happy to let go of the hardworking/loyal/getting on with it types.
Because the ones who make the right noises to the right people get to stay; the ones who just get on with it don't fit in because they make the lazy sods look bad; they stick out so get fired because they tend to be the ones with opinions and no more sense than to voice them.  It does not pay to give a damn about your role unless you own the company, ime.

To the OP, just because a role may have been described by an agency as "temp to perm" confers no right whatsoever to be made permanent.  I've been in the head space you seem to be in; believe me, it does not work.  Stop giving a damn, stop working so hard and start making the right noises to the right people:  That is the route to a permanent role at that level.
Nearly every workplace has a "culture" that you need to fit into.
This means not annoying the important people and also progressing and working at the same rate as the others already there.
If you fall outside this "culture" expect to get sacked if under two years of service or life made difficult that you will leave anyway.
