Reclaiming non-bank/credit charges

Hi, Im not sure if this has been covered before, I had a look around and couldnt see anything about it so here goes;

My mobile phone company takes a direct debit payment from my account each month for my phone bill, but charges me £15 if this direct debit fails. Obviously, on top of this, the bank charges my £35 making it rather a pain in the !!! if my payment fails. The mobile phone company don't send me a letter or any kind of notification if the payment fails, only a brief text message.

Am I able to claim these charges back, or refuse to pay them if they are illegal? Or are they not covered under the same law as bank charges as its not a bank thats charging them? Any advice would be massively appreciated.

    It is unlawful if the charge is more than their costs, which is most likely at £15. As much as most banks would like to disagree, the law applies to everyone..
