Marriage allowance / tax code

Hi,  I've received a refund of my tax (2015-2019) 2 months ago, as I'm getting my partners tax allowance via marriage allowance, we back dated the claim but I would have thought this years tax code would have changed to reflect the allowance for the current year? Its still 1250L.  Should I not be getting the allowance for this year automatically?  or will it be paid as a lump sum at the end of the financial year?

Thanks

Possibly a question for the cutting tax forum rather than the welfare benefits forum https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/cutting-tax
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

My tax code changed from the standard 1250L to 1375M recognising the 10% tax allowance transfer from my wife to myself. You can check it in your personal tax account online or maybe give HMRC a ring.

Could it be that it would be too late for you to get the full benefit for this year from a change of tax code, given that we're nearly at the end of the tax year ? Have you had a notification of what your tax code will be net year ? You should be able to check via your online tax account https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account

Claims can be backdated to any tax year since April 2015 https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance

But updated tax codes for the current tax year are only issued to a certain date so that employers and pension payers have time to implement them.  Although we haven't quite reached that point yet.

And Marriage Allowance for previous tax years isn't ever included in the current years tax code.

But presumably, given the allowance can backdated, the tax code can be amended retrospectively and tax recalculated so that the full benefit will be obtained - I accept this may be at the stage of finalising the tax liability for the year rather than through ‘real time’. I read p00hsticks comment as meaning that the full benefit couldn’t be obtained having applied late in the year.

  • Only the benefit of Marriage Allowance for the  current tax year can be received through the current tax years tax code.

For any previous tax years HMRC would send a tax calculation and any tax refund would be paid direct to the individual.
