What about Linux? Are they advising against that too?
Well isn't Linux generally seen as more secure ? So I doubt it.
Whilst I generally wouldn't say any OS is more secure than the other. An end of support OS is less secure.
I don't see the problem here in what hsbc are doing. The inconvenience to someone who isn't tech savvy, yes.

Not much different from the banking apps that stop working on old versions of the app or the mobile OS.

Completely apart from the security problems, there is  the maintenance cost of supporting different versions of an operating system and at some point old systems become uneconomical to support.

    What about Linux?

You beat me to it!  If you want to be secure, use a linux machine - and dedicate it to secure computing.
Re: updating Windows, the browser is the weak point, so an updated browser on a Win7 machine is, and will be, pretty safe.
But a dedicated Linux machine is what you want for secure computing.

...unless of course you get some nasty trojan, keyboard logger, etc installed exploiting a vulnerability in Windows 7 which has been patched in Windows 10...
