Whilst I generally wouldn't say any OS is more secure than the other. An end of support OS is less secure.
I don't see the problem here in what hsbc are doing. The inconvenience to someone who isn't tech savvy, yes.
Not much different from the banking apps that stop working on old versions of the app or the mobile OS.1 -
Completely apart from the security problems, there is the maintenance cost of supporting different versions of an operating system and at some point old systems become uneconomical to support.0
