I'm going on a cake decorating workshop! The results!

Sorry I know it's not really moneysaving but it could be if I get better and have less waste lol.

I've just had a phone call to say I've got a cancellation place on Saturday for a cake decorating workshop, I'm so excited:j I made cakes last year for presents and they were the first ones I'd ever done so were a bit rough around the edges. This year, hopefully, they'll be much better.

Sorry, just had to share that :D

  • Sounds great finc, these things are often booked up and hard to get on. perhaps you could share some photos of your hard work when you've done it.
  • I think these are fabulous and they have given me some ideas for mine. I have made mini ones to go in my xmas hampers but I was going to royal ice them as I don't think i'll be any good with the fondant.

I really liked the nut one. How did you do that one? Claire

Oh my god, how can you call them amateurish? They are so fab. Did you give them as presents/sell them/refuse to part with them and they are still in your kitchen? You obviously have a talent already so it must be fate that you got the place....maybe the start of something exciting, a little cottage industry:) Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for all your lovely comments. :o I didn't actually know what I was doing when I made those ones, it was sort of trial error and hope for the best. They were all given away as pressies apart from the round one, that was for us :D

squishyclaire..I made the nut one by warming apricot jam with a bit of brandy and putting nuts and dried fruit on top then brushing over some more of the jam and brandy mix. It looked quite good and was a lot easier to do as the messier you put the topping on the better it looks

haylibo.. I'd love to be able to do this as a bit of a sideline. If I find I can do this at the workshop I intend to enroll at night school or something. It would be nice to make money from something I enjoy.

Here's the results. Santa's hat had a bit of an accident in the car coming home and my son messed with the bow before I got a pic.

Thanks, I'm quite proud of it :o

The layers aren't actually layers. Roll out a strip of fondant icing/sugar paste that is just over half the radius of the cake and cut down the middle. Put one strips on the cake board starting at the middle of the strip and work it around the cake gently. Do the same with the other strip on the other side of the cake and trim.

The other layer is just a piece of icing rolled out into a long sausage shape and place around the base of the cake. We used crimpers to give the edging to it. They're just like big tweezers and are easy to use.

I know that's really unclear but it's actually quite easy to do.
