Although development of these only really began to move forward in the 1980's when genetics began to improve I believe, and we are still learning about how this new virus behaves. If a current anti-viral should prove even partially effective, it will presumably already have been determined safe for use, hence at least one stage of testing need not be repeated.

In those 20 years, unless you've been working in parts of Asia, you've not dealt with this type of scenario. For each individual pharmaceutical, it's a bit of a long shot, but we have more antiviral drugs available today which have already passed Phase I than at any point in the past.  And more computational biology tools to perform in-silico docking experiments to weed that number down.  And then lots of other drug candidates to for the treatment of symptoms.  Phase II/III trials are already in progress.  Whether they'll be complete before the pandemic ends is a different matter, but it's unlikely this will be the last coronavirus.

That implies buying, selling and timing. Gambling in other words, which is something this thread seems to be all about.
FWIW I haven't been gambling but did make a scheduled purchase yesterday and will make another this month and one every month thereafter, unless the virus, or far more likely something else, gets me...
