Multi Car Policy - No Claims Bonus

Several years ago I set up a multi car policy with Admiral. They set it up with me as the policyholder on all three vehicles but I was not made aware that this meant that my wife and son would not earn their own no claims bonus. Admiral gave an 'introductory discount' (not shown on any paperwork) acknowledging that my wife brought 9 years no claims bonus to the policy so financially it was ok at the time but now if we want to move elsewhere her no claims in Nil and all those years are effectively lost unless we stay with Admiral.
Within the multi car policy they can now register her as the policyholder for one of the cars and start earning her own no claims again from now onwards but that doesn't solve the problem if we wanted to go elsewhere.
Does anyone have a way around this?

Some companies allow NCD to be given if you were a named driver and sole user of the vehicle - you just need to do some more quotes.  Maybe speak to an insurance intermediary/broker - if they still exist now online comparison sites are everywhere.
  • Only the policyholder normally earns the NCB in most cases. Unless you have a renewal stating your wife has accrued NCD then she has to start with zero if she wants a policy in her name.

"Can a named driver on my policy earn their own?

Yes, named driver No Claims Bonus applies and they can build up their own to use on another Admiral policy, ready for when they take out their own insurance. It's ideal if you've put your son or daughter on your policy, as it should help make their insurance easier to afford when they have their own car and take out a new Admiral-group policy in their own name.

    What about MultiCar and MultiCover?

Each driver on the MultiCar policy builds up their own Bonus (it works the same way as named drivers, above). If one driver on the policy makes a claim and loses some or all of their No Claims Bonus, it doesn't affect the other drivers."

That's why I thought it was ok originally but it's not quite as clear cut. If the driver is named as the Policyholder then they get their own no claims which can be taken elsewhere. If they are just a named driver Admiral will give them a discount for their no claims period ( "to use on another Admiral policy") but it's not a No Claims that they can take elsewhere.

You're right, but this only applies if the policy that the NCB was earned on has been active within the last 2 years.

Admiral told me that the no claims lives with the car, not the person.
We had 2 cars on a multi car policy but they would not give us ncd when we added a third. They did however give us a substantial "introductory" reduction.

Any scope in the named driver insuring their car with admiral to get the NCD?
