Claiming for a group villa booking by someone else

This is a "what if?" rather an actual problem (so far). Last Sept my brother-in-law booked a villa for a group of friends and family in France for July. We've made our own travel arrangements. There are now two possible problems that may arise with the holiday:
1) Over New Year one of my family was suddenly diagnosed with a congenial heart condition. They are waiting for an op but that is unlikely to be before autumn 2020. As this happened many months after the booking our travel insurance says we are covered (I have also upgraded our policy to ensure the condition is covered whilst we are on holiday).
2) Uncertainty due to Corvid-19
We're still planning to travel but were just wondering where we stood if we had to claim for our share of a group villa booking done by someone else (my brother-in-law) on our behalf?
