What about one of those wheat lavender bags, you can get them in teddy bear ... form and that now - great for popping in the microwave to ease all your aches & pains.
  • We bought my gran a lovely 100% Cashmere scarf from M&S (£19.50!) - but scarves and other accessories don't come in different sizes :D

She is diabetic, so sweet things are out too, and she has enough money to buy herself anything she really wants anyway *bangs head against wall* However, the other two things that she has come up with on her wish list is a nice new fountain pen and a holder for her blue disabled badges (I'm pretty sure we'll be able to find one in a mobility shop).

    Hope that helps!
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions.

The past few years at Christmas and birthdays she has started saying that she doesn't like things or they are not her size or she doesn't eat sweets, cakes, etc. She has lost lots of weight and still thinks she is a size 16 - we have tried to buy her smaller things but she just makes us take them back and things in a 16 look ridiculous on her! I feel quite bad at not really buying much but when I do she doesn't really want it anyway.

Think I might get her a wheat bag or hot water bottle with tea cup, tea tray etc, as she does still drink tea. Writing paper etc also a good idea.

    Thanks again everyone x
  • May I just add that if any one is to buy slippers for their elderly relatives that they buy ones that are NOT slip on ones but ones that have velcro to fasten them?

This could help to reduce the possibility of a fall or slip and there is evidence that "sloppy slip on slippers" can be a cause many of these falls and slips.

  • It's so hard..... I bought my grandma a plaque with a poem about grandmas and some virgin nail varnishes, even though 74 she still has her acrylic nails done every two weeks.

  • Hiya,

You could try cutting out the size labels from the clothes (you could say they were from an online shop that cuts out the labels to prevent returns), and give them to her on hangers with "size 16" labels on them - just a thought, I know it's a bit devious but that way she'd at least get clothes that fit!

I bought my gran lavender-filled padded satin coathangers last year, and this year I was going to get a lovely photo of her with my husband and me developed and frame it, but sadly she died a few weeks ago :(
  • Hello,
I have a gran 'who has everything' so it's so hard to find something to get her for christmas and birthdays... My suggestions would be:

-flowers (not original but will brighten up the house)
    -a nice plant
-what about toiletries? she will use these everyday so you could get her luxurious ones and there's often special offers on soaps, etc
-tights (my gran likes getting these)
    -her fave perfume?
-a balloon delivered with a nice message - you can get all different kinds & it's something different that might give her a laugh

    Hope this helps! x
  • I was going to suggest being devious with the labels too but oojeyboojey got there first! My grandma asks for "comestables" - says she doesn't want or need any more things laying about. I usually get her some nice teas and jam or biscuits and smellies, that sort of thing. She likes Cherries in Kirsh and isn't the sort of thing she'd get herself so I get her a little jar of those too - but if food is out that's not much help to you!

Maybe a new teapot or one of those little in cup brewing things so you don't end up with a huge pot of tea?
  • i have made a lavender themed hamper, with lavender scented coat hangers £1.99 from wilkinsons, and some yardley smellies from boots.
