    We stayed in Buxton last year and had a nice day down the road at the Heights of Abraham.

    I think our hotel had some money off vouchers in reception.

    How can you not have fun in Derbyshire? :D

    All of these ideas are free except for parking and food;

    There are hundereds of walks to do (and mid week they will be nice and quiet) a good one, if it's a nice day, is to park in the car park or on the road by The Devils !!!!!! (you'll have to pay but it's cheaper than the car park in the village) walk towards Castleton and walk behind the village car park and up to the top of Hollins Cross. Then walk across the ridge to Mam tor, down the big hill through the gorge and back to the car. It's about 4 miles in total but worth it because the views are amazing. If you do it this way theres a big hill to climb at the start then it's flat or down hill all the way to the car ;)

    You could even combine this with a trip to the devils !!!!!! which is a cave, you go in by boat and it's very interesting apparently but I'm always too ready for a cup of tea and some sandwiches :D.

    If you go into any book shop, tourist info, car park with a cafe you will be able to buy a leaflet of 5 or 6 good walks in that area for 50p - £2.

    If the idea of a hill sounds like far to much work then you could walk or hire a bike along one of the many cycle trails they are off road along old railway lines (now tarmaced and easy to walk/cycle with no hills) such as Tissington (Ashbourne) or High Peak (Buxton)

    After all that excersise you could got to Bakewell for a slice of bakewell tart :drool:

    If you can find Grindlesford railway station you can walk all around the gardens of the nearby hall and along the gorge around there for free and finish up with a chip cob from grindlesford cafe (by the station) - it's huge! :drool:

    Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall both have fantastic gardens and (I think!) these are free to walk around - the bulk of the estate is free to walk around and I don't think you have to pay to get into the formal gardens but check first.
    Go to the roaches and see if you can spot a wild kangaroo :eek:

    Someone set a collection of wallaby's or kangaroos or something free and they roam the area around the roaches (a funny shaped hill near Leek) apparently you can spot them hopping about, but I've never seen one.

    Depending on when you are going, go to Matlock (inland traditional British seaside town) in the evening for the Matlock lights (poor mans version of Blackpool, but on boats) people spend all year designing and making the boats and some are amazing. I think this starts on August bank holiday though and runs until early October some time, which might be a bit late.

    You do have to pay to get in the formal gardens at Chatsworth but you can just park in the car park (about £1.50 ) and walk around the grounds. You can also use the toilets and go to the cafe and gift shop.If you do feel like paying the house is worth the entrance fee in my opinion.The farm shop- about 1 mile away is worth a visit.

    Bakewell is worth visiting. Nice shops. It gets busy on a Monday- market day . Don't ask for a Bakewell Tart in the bakers-they call them Puddings!
    Buxton, Eyam , Ashbourne are all interesting places to visit. There's a stone circle at Arbour Low which you can walk round for a small fee.

    If you visit any local tourist information they will have leaflets about well dressing which you might find interesting.
