Two jobs and ssp

Options
I have two part time jobs.  I was admitted to hospital over the weekend but have now been discharged.  It is likely I will be off work for some months.  How do i know which job to claim SSP.

You may be eligible to claim SSP from both employers if you meet the eligibility criteria for each job.

As pmlindyloo says you may qualify for SSP from both employers or from neither - it entirely depends on your levels of earnings in each job.

Depending on your circumstances you may be able to claim UC to top up your SSP.

It's one of the anomolies of SSP that it can be claimed for more than one job, at the same time.  The base requirement is earning over £118 per week.  With that base line it's entirely possible that somebody working 3 jobs at 15 hours per week each could claim 3 times!
  • Many thanks for these replies.   Very useful.  The woman in the next bed told me you had to choose.   With these replies I have now been able to check online.   I am earning around 150 from each job.
Presumably the firms will be able to reclaim this from the DWP as this is a state benefit right?  That is what this woman told me.  I have only been working for one of them for two weeks and the other for three weeks.

SSP isn’t claimed back from the government it comes directly from the employers these days. You will need to check with your employers to see if you will qualify for sick pay from them
as you have only been employed for less than 1 month on each role.

I believe that OP could qualify as long as he has done some work (which is bit tough on the employer). See https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay/eligibility
OP, you will need a Fit Note from your GP or hospital to give to the employers to support your sickness.

The normal rule for SSP is that you need to have earnings that average at least the lower earnings limit ( £118 ) over the eight weeks ending with the last payday before the sickness started.  In this case there will not be eight weeks so the average is done over however many weeks that have been paid up to and including the last payday before the sickness started.  If full weeks not worked then it goes to number of days employed.
If you do qualify in both jobs they will each apply the rules of SSP as if they were your only employer.  So you will have three waiting days ( no payment is due for these days ) in each job. For example you only work Monday and Tuesday and you are sick from Monday your waiting days would be Monday and Tuesday of the first week and then Monday of the second week.  You would then get one day SSP for the Tuesday of the second week which would be half of a full week's SSP  From then on you would get the full week's SSP for every week you are off sick on Monday and Tuesday until your entitlement ended, or you return to work.  This means that if you work different number of days in each job your SSP payments will start at different times, and could be different amounts for any odd days, though the weekly figure will be the same.
