Help - my Firstplus claim is rejected

Don’t know if anyone can help here but I’ve pursued a PPI claim with firstplus and they seem to be agreeing that I have been missold, however because they sent me a letter in 2012 asking me to contact them if I thought I’d been missold, and I did not contact them then, they say they cannot uphold my complaint as I should have reasonably known at that time that I might have been missold and should have contacted them then! It never occurred to me at that time that I had been
missold and I did not believe then that I would have been affected, so did nothing. However, as misselling of PPI was publicised I began to wonder and duly made a claim before the deadline date of August 2019. Firstplus will not accept that in 2012 when they sent their letter that I did not believe I was affected and because I did not respond then they say I am too late and that they will not uphold my complaint now as I should have “reasonably known” in 2012 as it was suggested to me in a letter then that I might have been missold. I’ve phoned them twice and written twice since being rejected but they are still saying that they will not uphold my claim of being missold (which they seem to be admitting I have) because I did not claim in 2012!  I will go to the Ombudsman but wondered if I should keep pursuing also with Firstplus? Anyone else had any experiences like this with them? Any help or advice gratefully received .... this is so frustrating to know I am due recompense but that they refuse to pay out! Thank you. Dot.

When you are timebarred, they do not even look at your complaint

PPI complaining started in the early 2000s and was publicised and well known about by 2006.   You were sent a letter in 2012 to ask you to complain if you felt you were missold.   Yet you waited until 2019.

Firstplus will not accept that in 2012 when they sent their letter that I did not believe I was affected and because I did not respond then they say I am too late and that they will not uphold my complaint now as I should have “reasonably known” in 2012 as it was suggested to me in a letter then that I might have been missold.
They dont have to accept it.   They wrote to you telling you that to complain if you felt you were missold. The letter would have contained examples of missales.  Yet you chose not to.

You have nothing to pursue with First Plus as they have timebarred your complaint.   The FOS cannot look at your complaint either but they will check the timebar is valid.  If it is valid, then its game over.

    yes

Thanks for your response  - most appreciated. Reading what you have said, I just wish I had realised back then that I might have been missold but I wrongly thought that the PPI was only for the first 5 years of my loan and would only be taken off for that period of time - I now realise that it was taken off for the duration of my loan. If I had believed I had been missold I would have made contact but I thought what I had been led to believe when I took out the PPI was what I had. 😞 thanks though ..... sounds like I shouldn’t have been so trusting and should have got in touch when I got the letter in 2012. Hindsight is a great thing.... I wish I’d known about the time bar thing too, but I guess I’ve learned from my rather expensive mistake.
