We have a quality  old Sony personal CD player  in good nick. However although works with battery, the power cable is irrepairable  .On Ebay , we can get a used Sony replacement All the important number  detail on the plug is identical (although ours made in Malaysia and Ebay one in China), and the end that goes into the player is identical . The only difference is  that our old one has one of those small cylinders wrapped into the cable , and the new one doesnt .  Google tells me the cylinder is something to do with interference , so logic says its there for a reason, but why wouldnt the new power cable need it to fit the same model machine?   ps the cylinder cant physically be transferred to another cable )    The new cable  is not cheap at £20 (scarcity value ) so any thoughts please on   the chances it would work well with mine ?)

The cylinder is a ferrite core and is indeed to stop interference. The replacement adaptors may not need this as they may be a different design or possibly have an internal ferrite core, If you have a problem you can buy clip on ferrite cores on Amazon/Ebay.

£20 sounds very steep for a power supply for a portable cd player.

Thanks, thats very helpful .Couple more questions based on that info if I may .  Could the replacement plug contain a ferrite core within, if still the same shape and without being physically bigger ? Secondly , if we had to purchase  a new ferrite core , how would we get it onto the cable -- the old one is sort of threaded through and around the cable, it can be slid up and down, but there doesnt appear to be a way of opening it up to detach it from the cable and of course it cant be slid off either end .  If we need to buy a 'loose'  ferrite core from the internet  ,  is it likely to be one that does open up to place the cable within , or would it be a case of  getting an electronics person to take of the jack plug end to get it on ?  Also,  how specific are the ferrite cores to the cable  or end device one is going to attach it to ?
Norman Castle -   Agreed , I was shocked, but  the only cheaper ones I could find for the model , were 6v against the 4.5  on ours.   Our device according to the blurb on plug,  is  Sony AC-ES 455k 4.5v Imput AC230 v   50Hz 4w,  Output  DC4.5v  500 mA   Made in Malaysia   501-41  Sony Corporation .  Googling that gives me 4 choices  and this secondhand one  is the same in all but the  ferrite thing and the number above where it says Sony Corporation.   The price is 'offers'  and I was thinking I might get it for a fiver under the asking price ?  I wouldnt have thought there would be many of the exact cables  available  , hence I suppose the seller calls the market?https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303502630257?ul_noapp=true

The important bits are 4.5v, at least 500mA and that the end fits the player. The lack of ferrite core won't really make a difference.

If you want to avoid the many cheap Chinese adapters which might or might not work, here's a genuine Sony very similar one for £9:-

You might need to check the size of the connector but my guess would be that it will fit.

Wow,  thanks everyone ,even a choice !  I would never have had enough knowhow about such things to dare to investigate alternatives to what looked identical !  Grateful for both links, but being risk averse  and having seen far too many shares on FB of Chinese plug overheating and causing fires,  Im favouring  the Sony option just for peace of mind !  Regarding the connector  Chris W  ,  are we talking the colour of the jack plug bit? (Im under the possibly flawed impression that colour denotes particular size?)

Yes you need the right size jack plug bit. Unfortunately colour doesn't denote any particular size, but might be a slightly different fit. The only way to tell is by measuring and/or comparing.

I would have thought it likely that model numbers E455K and E455D have the same jack plugs but I don't actually know.

Mm I thought I might have been wrong,  a colour would have been just too easy lol!  How difficult would it be for the seller to measure with a ruler/tape , are the differences so minimal  that its too hard to be sure of accuracy ?  I can get him to photograph the jack plug end on if the inside might be different  if thats a likely thing.
Probably go ahead anyway ,  I forget the one youve found is a hell of a lot cheaper than £20 , so not the end of the world if wrong .

The ferrite cores I was referring to are clip on over the cable, no need to remove plug.

Thanks Stevie .  Perfect if we need to go that direction at the end of the day .
