When Can I Switch Energy Suppliers

When can I switch energy suppliers?

the date my current deal finishes is 24th April. To avoid the leaving fee, do I need to wait until then to start the switch, or can I start it earlier?

thanks

Start of Switch process 49 days before tariff end date, at the earliest - You should get notification from your current supplier

On a fix? You can switch again penalty-free in the last 49 days of your deal

To protect people on fixed-tariff deals, Ofgem's rules mean suppliers can't charge exit fees in the last seven weeks of fixed-term deals.

So if you're near the end of a fix, you won't have to pay a fee to leave it and move to a new tariff – provided your switch completes within the last 49 days of your current deal.

I came on here to ask this same question as my tariff ends on 30 March so I can switch now and not pay exit fee. Brilliant B)

Just been told by SSE that I would have to pay the leaving fees despite being in last 49 days of contract. Does this sound right?

  • Hi all, my energy tariff finishes end of June 20 so 49 day switch period starts mid May.
Can I start the switch process prior to 49 day period (say 2/3 weeks) for the actual switch to fall "within" the 49 day period ?
Or does the switch have to be actioned within the 49days ??
    Thanks in advance.

I'd like to know this too. 49 days from end of contract will be 23rd May for me. Can I start the switch a week or two earlier and not be charged early exit fees, provided that the actual switch takes place in the final 49 days? I'm currently with People's Energy, who have been fine, but I'm now paying £159/year more than I should. Hence the quicker I can safely leave without penalty, the better.
    Thanks for any advice.
