The VLS60 multi asset fund has bonds to provide stability so might only drop around 25% in a full market crash. A stock market tracker (of a UK or global index such as the FTSE100 or FTSE All-World) might drop 50% or more in a full market crash. Investing overseas is so accessible now there really isn't much reason to constrain your investment outlook to just the UK market. Generally the longer that you can leave the money invested the more volatility you should consider taking. The exception is when markets are looking expensive based on long term trends there isn't likely to be as much reward for taking the extra risk.

May I muddy the waters and ask the benefits of the vanguard etc 60/40 typed funds to the tracker following the 100 or 250 FTSE ( aware that the FTSE is having a rest just now)  s
The FTSE100 is large cap UK equities (the big companies).  It has historically been an awful index to track
The FTSE250 is the mid cap (the medium sized companies.  Much better to follow as part of your satellite UK holdings but far more volatile.

You should not use single sector funds by themselves.  You would need to build a portfolio of other single sector funds as well.

VLS is a portfolio of funds within a single fund (known as a fund of funds).
VLS60 and VLS40 are far lower risk than investing in the FTSE100 or FTSE250
