What kind is this bulb/tube, and how do I remove it?

Anyone know what this kind of bulb/tube is called specifically? And how to remove it from this holder?
We’ve tried sliding either holder aside but no go. Tried pressing the backs of the holders which look a bit button-like. Tried just pulling it out (seems like it should be possible) but no luck with moderate force. Gathering courage to pull it harder. Worrying about breaking it.
We know we could and probably should replace the fixture, but we really like it, so want to put that off if we can.

It looks like the ends slide outwards, try wiggling them while pulling outwards. The bulb doesn't look properly fitted. Some old things are nice and worth keeping, I wouldn't consider that one of them.1

With that type of fitting, the contacts at each end were spring loaded so you pushed one end in and eased the lamp out at the other end. It seems that is what you have done but it is still catching slightly on the right end. Try putting it back in and pushing a little harder then pulling back out. Alternatively push in on the right end to see if that moved further. The lamp is just a tube light like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Striplight-240V-60W-221mm-Opal/dp/B0039O1KSA/ref=sr_1_9?qid=1583011537&refinements=p_n_feature_nine_browse-bin:3794347031&s=lighting&sr=1-9

LED versions of the bulb are available which will save some energy. Eg.

Got the bulb out, seeing electrical continuity from the plug to each side, but not in the bulb, so it seems it finally burned out. Thanks for the links (both to you and chrisw)!

So for my own future reference and in case it helps someone else - this bulb type seems to be called S15S/Striplite/Striplight/Strip lite/Strip light. There are different sizes - the one we’ve got is 221 mm.1
