Virgin Mobile

Options
Been a customer of Virgin Mobile way before & since since they stopped National ADSL broadband. Was given a tariff of £5pm, last year increased to £5.12pm. Have 4 accounts that I set up for this address, 2 in my name (myself & my 83 year old mum who only uses texts), plus 2 numbers for the person I'm a carer for (herself & our 86 year old Aunt, who only uses calls). All via same address. I got an email on 19th Feb saying my own personal tariff is being forced onto a new tariff £7pm. The other 3 accounts are not affected. Only me. I act for the other 3 people as carer & appropriate adult, so I usually use my own phone to arrange eg gas/electric utilities, dwp claims (eg Attendance Allowance), water rates etc etc. So out of these 4 phones, most usage is by me - but still well within my 1000mins, 1GB data, unlimited texts. The other 3 hardly anything.
I am the only one to get an enforced change of tariff from 1000 mins (£5.12pm) to unlimited mins (£7.00pm) which I don't want or need. After 3 hours of text help with CS, then another online chat to head manager, agreed on £6pm.
However I still feel aggrieved.
None of my other 3 family members are affected. Reason given is "I use my phone more!!"
Of course I do, I'm the primary carer. But I set up all 4 of our accounts at about the same time...only mine has been singled out for an unnecessary 'upgrade'.
This seems like discrimination to me. As a carer I use my own phone, but arranged the other 3 mobiles for essential contact. They are not affected as very low usage! Not surprising as mine is the main phone used. Surely Virgin could average the usage as 4 phones in this circle. Instead I must pay extra for a new tariff whereas the others stay unaffected. Seems like I'm being punished as a carer!!!

Over the years, Virgin Media has sold hundreds of different tariffs. Many of those tariffs still have a small number of customers on each of them. This is a nightmare to administer.

They have decided to rationalise the list of active tariffs, cancelling those with a very small number of users, and move people on to a tariff with more benefits for a similar price.

Now that you have unlimited minutes, you don't need to think about whether you are going over the limit, only whether you are calling a number that is not included in the allowance.
  • I really liked your info about this operator.

If you are aggrieved then move your business elsewhere but there are not many providers that have a sim for £5 on offers and these are mainly "Mobile Virtual Network Operators" that don't have their own network. There are a few more for sims £6 and a few that let you gift data to another user but not talk time.
