My bills refer to “gas unrestricted” and “unrestricted units”. SSE have proved incapable of explaining these terms, so perhaps someone here can.

An unrestricted meter is one that allows uninterupted, continuous supply.
This is as opposed to a restricted meter refers to a meter that only allows supply at certain periods.i.e for a restricted hours tariff (RHT).
For domestic customers, a restricted meter is usually (a) only found with an electricity supply and (b) associted with legacy tariffs.
e.g a meter that supplies electricity at certain times of the day for heating would be restricted, whilst another unrestricted, related meter allows for supply at any time for other purposes.
For the sake of clarity, an E7 meter is not a restricted meter as it allows unrestricted (continuous) supply albeit it records usage on two different registies depending on the time of supply.
Some commercial tariffs use restricted gas meters. It allows the supplier to cut off high commercial gas users at times of heavy demand on the grid, in return for a lower tariff.
