PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Hello Forumites! In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non-MoneySaving matters are not permitted per the Forum rules. While we understand that mentioning house prices may sometimes be relevant to a user's specific MoneySaving situation, we ask that you please avoid veering into broad, general debates about the market, the economy and politics, as these can unfortunately lead to abusive or hateful behaviour. Threads that are found to have derailed into wider discussions may be removed. Users who repeatedly disregard this may have their Forum account banned. Please also avoid posting personally identifiable information, including links to your own online property listing which may reveal your address. Thank you for your understanding.

samchops said:I get the feeling that people on here think I am either naive or stupid. I am neither. I spent 20 years as a systems engineer for IBM, I've had enough of that but we have plenty of other strings to our bows. I am also a qualified riding instructor and I KNOW I can get work doing that there as I have looked. I make and restore carved wooden rocking horses and can teach adult English lessons. My other half is a guitar instructor amongst other things, he also has a forklift and a sprayers license. We could work anywhere, but we don't want to, we want to do as little as possible for other people and prefer now to work for ourselves. We can afford to buy somewhere in Eire with lots of acreage, then do nothing for years if we wished to, but we don't.Perhaps when you join the other forum you'll put at least some of this into your introduction. People here can only know as much as you tell us, and to be fair, for every person that dreams of being largely self-sustaining in the countryside, there's another who tries and fails, sometimes spectacularly. I've seen that and it's not pleasant.I'm like you: enough skills, connections, money etc so that I'll never starve, and my needs are simple, but not everyone is like us. It's only right to err on the side of caution when discussing 'getting away from it all,' when so many boomerang back again. Not me though; I love the country life.

There are so many things that you need to do and would be worth looking through the stickies on these pages. The two permanent threads on renting and buying are still at the top on my version of the forum.Ah, but apparently one may press the cog thing and 'dismiss' them, giving more space to the questions. I know, because I've just done that and the renting thread has disappeared!
"This post is no longer maintained. Since leglislation, regulations, links and processes frequently change, the content has been removed as it may otherwise be out-of-date, misleading, or erroneous."
That "dismiss" thing is a bit crap, I've not pressed it, but how the hell are you supposed to get it back?! Poxy forum *rolls eyes*Ah.....didn't actually read it, and as you say, I can't get the renting one back easily, though there must be a way.I wonder if this had anything to do with a certain person being PPR for a while, even though he was no trouble? The mystery deepens.....
