Printing/Scanning: Variable & Inconsistent Usage

Hi, was wondering if anyone could share their opinions on the most cost effective/sensible option (or options, as I'm open to separate devices if that's best) for printing & scanning? I've had a browse on here but none of the recent threads I've read seem to cover this situation:
  • Printing very sporadically (i.e. may not print anything at all for 2/3 months, then I need to print over 100 pages in a few days) and would particularly appreciate a reliable printer.
  • Colour is needed from time to time and usually out of hours - so need a device that can print colour (no need for high quality).
  • Prefer to print double-sided where possible to save paper (i.e. duplex printing would be useful)
  • Very conscious of how expensive ink can be so tend to use decent highly rated (e.g. Amazon highly reviewed) third party inks where possible to save money.
  • Need to scan sporadically too, usually just a handful of pages but once/twice a year I need to scan 100+ double sided pages, so an Automatic Document Feeder is needed.
I've eliminated HP & their Instant ink as my usage isn't consistent enough to fit in with their product, and I'd like to avoid Canon if possible as I've had so many reliability issues with their Windows software on multiple PCs and versions of their printers. I've had an excellent Dell mono laser printer years ago but that won't cover this need (even if it was still available).

Thank you.
