Carers allowance with ESA ,Hosing and Councl tax benifits

Hi All
we was just wondering I recently was moved from DLA to PIP And was put onto mid care. My doctors have been telling me for years to apply for the higher rate but as I was on low care and high mob I decided that rather than risking loosing any of my awards because  you read about that many loosing their awards so. I thought stick with what I had. Then the PIP Change came so had to do the changeover and it was as bad as a experience as I’d read and seen people go through.  With the f2f being the worse. And when I got the award the report of the examiner I had. Was with it which I did not expect but to tell you the truth I’m glad it was because there was so many lies in it that it was unreal. She even wrote “I don’t think this person should get Pip because” and continued on with things not even talked about but had assumed or pulled out of their muddled brain I think.

Anyway as I got this. We was told my wife can get Carers allowance which she has been doing for the last 16 years since my bypass surgery did not go to plan. And left me hardly able to walk or get. About and over the years. Iv just gone more n more downhill. We have already been told that we will lose the £30+ from my ESA for one of the disability premiums. And we wondered if it would affect the housing or council tax that we get. I mean it might not even be worth applying in the end. Especially if your only going to be a few pounds better off?

Anyway thanks for any future help you able to pass on

best regards Osh

Your best off using one of the benefit checkers, like turn to us, see here. Change whatever you think you could be entitled to & see how it works out for your situation vs current benefits

Does you're wife claim either PIP daily living or DLA mid/high rate care? If she doesn't then you won't lose any disability premiums from your ESA because you won't be entitled to the SDP. By claiming CA you will be £36.85 per week better off. If she does claim either of those then yes you'll be worse off if she claims CA.
As she's been claiming CA for 16 years then the rest of your benefits will remain the same as they always were.

I can't see how moving from DLA low rate care to PIP standard rate Daily Living would have any impact on your ESA unless your wife also receives disability benefit. I am not clear from your post whether you still have the mobility component or not but the loss of your mobility component would not affect your entitlement to any premiums.

If your wife also receives DLA mid or high rate care or daily Living Pip you would now be entitled to a Severe Disability Premium (SDP) in your ESA which would increase the ESA (you would not have been entitled to this before because you were on DLA low rate care).

Your sentence reads that your wife has been claiming carer's Allowance fo 16 years but I assume that you mean she has been caring for 16 years but has been told that she could now apply for Carer's Allowance. If she does this she will be paid £66.16/week. Your ESA will reduce because the Carer's Allowance will be taken into account as income but, as poppy said, you will be better off overall by £36.85/week. However, if she gets a disability benefit herself, she should not apply for Carer's Allowance because the SDP referred to above will be worth more.

Claiming Carer's Allowance will not affect your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction. In some circumstances it could increase your entitlement but I would expect you to already be getting the maximum amount if you are on income based ESA.

If you disagree with the PIP decision you can request a Mandatory Reconsideration and then appeal to he tribunal service. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/benefits-introduction/problems-with-benefits-and-tax-credits/challenging-a-benefit-decision/challenging-a-dwp-benefit-decision-on-or-after-28-october-2013/challenging-a-benefit-or-tax-credit-decision-asking-for-a-reconsideration/
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

    Hello again
I will try and put down who claims what and for who its claim for.

Right I claim ESA for myself but as a couple so there is a component in the amount for my wife.  I claim PIP. for myself receiving mid care (hence this thread about the carer allowance claim). And high rate mobility.  We also claim housing and council tax. Then apart from dentists and stuff like this. That is what we get.  My wife gets no benefit’s either for or by herself.

Also I think I may have Come over wrong when I said about my wife and the caring for the last 16 years. What I meant was that she had been doing all the work as a carer for me but not receiving any payment for doing so

Which I take the blame for as the docs and nurses said they would support me should I want to try for a higher rate of care. As I was only getting low care but high mob so rather than trying and losing out (because of the horror stories I’d been reading  at the time with almost everyone losing there claims) I thought stay with what we was already getting. But now I was mandatory so nothing I could do other than sit and worry.  I’m the end it came through ok. But it was a big thank you to the DM  because if it had been left to the examiner I’d have lost the lot.  Why do people have to tell bare faced lies. However there are those that are on our side of the fence that also lie to get benefits to which they are not entitled to so is it karma or what?

Our daughter also lives with us.

    Thank you regards Osh*

There's no mid rate for care or high rate mobility for PIP. It's Standard or Enhanced. As you do have a daily living award for PIP then your wife claiming carers allowance for looking after you will mean you will be £36.85 per week better off. The advice in my previous comment, is correct.
