Long term sick & benefits

Hi all,
My partner suffered a severe mental breakdown at work just over 2 years ago. She has been off sick from work since with severe depression and anxiety and has been on a huge nhs waiting list for therapy- a big reason her employer has been so supportive. Obviously her ssp ran out some time ago and she has been claiming PIP and ESA benefits. We had a meeting with her employer, who has said that she can take a career break of up to a maximum of 2 years once her therapy starts in approx 5 months from now. If she doesnt take the career break, the other option they have given is to take ill health retirement. Something that would devastate her and most likely worsen her depression and mental health. The ultimate goal was to try and get back to work once the therapy was completed.
The one thing her employer wasnt sure on was, if she took the career break, would she then lose her benefits that shes currently on?
Her union rep was unsure about this too.
Any help appreciated!

Taking a career break (I assume unpaid) will make no difference as her employment status is irrelevant. PIP is a benefit to help with the extra costs of long term illness/disability and ESA is for those with an illness/disability that limits their ability to work.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1
