Halifax wrote off CC debt?? - Advice

Hi all

Bit of background:

I've had credit cards for the past 15 years and had built up a good rating, as such I had a few credit cards with decent limits on there all totaling £15k ish. I opened my own business few years ago and raised funds (ended up maxing my credit cards out, took out a loan, got funding etc etc), business was good then slowed down and ended up closing so have been in the persistent debt cycle for a few years now, I had always paid the minimum amount but last 8/9 months been missing some here and there as not had enough income.

Last month I paid the minimum (£250) for my HSBC card (which was maxed at £7k), when I tried to use it a few days ago it was declined so I rang HSBC and the automated machine said I had a balance of £43 which I did not understand why, I spoke to a few people at HSBC but was going around in circles to see what happened to the balance but ended up giving up.

Then yesterday I received this letter https://ibb.co/XWsPzrL and when I logged on to my Halifax account and the last transaction shows:

Credit Limit: £2,400.00
Available Credit: £2,400.00
Overdue amount: N/A
20th Feb 20 - Balance Write off £2,400.30 cr

My credit rating is poor, like really poor, does this mean that Halifax thought I would never be able to pay this balance off and wrote the debt off? - apart from the letter I have had no other communication with Halifax? and same with HSBC?.

I have two other credit cards - MBNA and Tesco - MBNA around £3700 balance - when I log in it says no account found and the Tesco balance is still there.

I was reading online and some websites say that due to the new regulations if the companies card agree to turn this into a loan or make other plans with you they can write these off, but i've not had any communication with the companies for them to even suggest to turn this into a loan or make other arrangements.

Any opinions?.

I would very much doubt that HSBC would write off £7K. Their Credit team would have been chasing you and trying to arrange a payment plan at the very least. Before writing anything off.
If they and the others have written the debt off then you may/will find it next to impossible to get any credit for a while, as these will be recorded on your credit score. So check the 3 credit agency's and see what is showing.

Have you been in previous contact with Halifax over the debt? As that is a unusual letter to be sent without any previous contact.

  • No literally nothing from HSBC - the card was working fine until last month when it stopped and the balance just seemed to have vanished. The team at HSBC, despite being in Asia somewhere, just sent me in circles with a few people so ended up giving up. Im worried they have parked it somewhere and will forward it to some agency for collection without speaking to me or anything first. - has anyone come across this before?

Again same thing with Halifax, no contact, halifax was the card I only missed a payment once on and they just transferred the minimum from my current account to cover it. There is a few hundred in the current account which is still there so I would have thought they would use that in contra at the minimum. - Do you think this debt is actually written off per their letter?. Would be amazing if it was but dont want anything to come and bite me on the bum later down the line.

Will check credit files - would they have been updated already or worth waiting a month before I do?.

    sounds like been sold
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
