When dealers say HPI Check Clear, is that always true?  - should we beleive them?

or we should still pay for our own via the HPI company/ RAC HPI, and get it ourselves?

Can we ask them, to see the HPI check report?

-Are  they obliged to show us the HPI Clear report ?

How do we know they are  not just putting HPI check on their advert, just to make the car look better?

The one they are saying is 'clear' could it just be the Free one, which doesn't show everything,  or they cannot offer that on the advert?

Of course you can ask to see the report.
Are they OBLIGED to show you? No more than you're obliged to buy the car rather than walk away...

You don't get the benefit of any guarantee from the check, of course. It's all down to your attitude to risk.

As they've said its HPI clear they are liable if you suffer any losses as a result of that not being true so, whats's their incentive to lie?
  • What sort of dealer is it?
If it turns out to have outstanding finance on it, the dealer would be responsible but getting the money out of them may be a different matter.
If it's a well established dealer or a franchise of a main manufacturer then you shouldn't hopefully have a problem but if it's an "Arthur Daley" sort of dealer, things may be different,

You should always apply your own due diligence and vigilance when making a purchase, it does seem a lot of you guys want to hear what you want to hear or read what you want to read.
When buying from a dealer you still apply the same thouroughness as if you were buying privately.

If you buy through an established dealer, with forecourt etc, keep the original receipt and paperwork, good title will pass to you even if the dealer doesn't have good title.  If its a trader selling from a house then run your own checks.

Always ask if its HPI clear and ask to see the report, if its all clean then there should have no issue showing it to you.  It will show if its been written off as well.
  • For the sake of a few quid I always do my own check and sleep easy.

Do your own. A friend of mine was shown a cleverly faked one and had to go to court to get what he was owed. Lesson learnt for him.
