Can I move money onto sons Monzo Card?

Options
Hi my son is in Asia at the moment.
His phone has broken so he can't top up his monzo card and is desperately short of money.
He has borrowed a phone to send an email asking me to top up his monzo for him.
I don't have any account details for him. How safe would it be for him to send his account details to me on a borrowed phone?
Will monzo accept a top up from an account thats not linked to it and will it take long for him to get access to the money?

many thanks

Monzo Is a bank, your son has an account number and sort code in the usual way, to which you make a normal faster payment which will probably arrive and be available to him more or less instantly. He can also do this himself from another bank account of his own.

Emails are not a particularly secure communication but such account details are not a particularly sensitive thing to send.

Sounds like a typical Emma scam. I suggest you need to speak to him before you transfer any money to him.

    I agree with @penners324

sparkiemalarkie - For information, the Monzo sort code is 04-00-04, so any information sent to you that differs will not be Monzo. Would not prevent scammers having a Monzo account either though.

I take it you do not hold a Monzo account, otherwise Monzo to Monzo transfer would be the safest and your son would appear in your contacts.

Perhaps open one for this purpose, and possible future similar events??
  • Yes just be careful that the account you are sending the money to is indeed your son's account

ideally you need to be able to contact him to verify it is indeed him that is sending you the email
  • Thank you all for your comments. Thankfully it has been sorted out.
Luckily, way back, he set up a standing order to his Monzo account of £100 per week/month (not sure which) when he was trying to budget. It has just kicked in so he has been able to eat and pay for accommodation.
It had never occurred to me that it might be a scam , but you're right, it certainly could have been.
The pattern of his messages was definitely him though.
I think I will get a Monzo card. It would certainly make things a bit easier if it did ever happen again.
    thanks again

Glad to hear it's all sorted, but why would you need a Monzo card to assist him in the future? Just because Mozno is an App only bank doesn't mean you need the app or a Monzo account to send money to your Son. It's not some sort of a pre-paid card you top up, even though it sounds like your son is using it as one. It's a standard UK bank account with a debit card attached to it.

All you need to know is his standard UK bank account number and sort code and you can transfer him money in seconds via fast payment from any UK bank account you already have.
