Declined by Barclaycard...

I applied for a Barclaycard Initial card and was declined.
At the moment, I have a Capital One Classic Card (did not have to pay a deposit) and have ran that well for the last year, had a credit limit of £200 and they upped it to £400 a coupleof months ago.
Also, I have just bought a house and got a mortgage for £79,000 with no problems... so why did Barclaycard decline me? If a building society is willing to loan me £79,000 (albiet secured on the property) why can't Barclaycard issue me with a card for a lot smaller amount ???

Hi theatretony
Thats a pity!
I think Barclaycard use your Equifax credit report. Have you checked your credit files recently? The building society may only check your credit files with Experian (think halifax and a few others do). You may have something small on your Equifax file that you dont know about. I would get a copy of each and check, then if nothing bad is on there-I would dispute their desision!
Good Luck

Err ... precisely *because* you already owe £79K, perhaps?0 -
I remember being declined by Barclaycard. Can be annoying and depressing - just means I'll never use them again.

In my case a relative living at the same address had some dodgy credit, which was somehow linked to my credit record and I guess Barclays assumed it was my own.
Ah well, ended up applying elsewhere. It's wierd how one place will give you a gold card with a massive credit limit and low interest, whilst others will just say no. Guess it's the old "computer says no" sketch from Little Britain.
Just try elsewhere.

I applied for this credit card and had to produce extra proof of identity. I called Barclaycard this morning to find out at what stage the application process was at as I haven't received back my proof of identity which was sent a week ago. I found out today that my application has not been approved nor declined and is waiting to be looked at. Does anyone know how long this process should take to find out if your application has been declined?0

Hmmm. I should try checking your credit file with Experian, Equifax, or whoever Barclaycard checked with before declining you (they have to tell you who it was). You can set about this online, it doesn't cost very much, and you have the right to correct anything that's wrong about your file. It may be you got turned down BECAUSE you have just been given a mortgage, and everyone's waiting to see how you will cope with the repayments!
Hope this helps.0 -
Given that you have just bought a house, there are two possible reasons I can think of.
1) as others have already said, you have just got yourself into a £79k debt so you may not appear to be good lending material in the short term
2) if you have just moved house, your address details may not be registering with the credit reference agencies' records yet.
Are you on the electoral roll yet at the new address? I imagine that should help.

Have you given them a ring and asked for an explanation? Such as low credit score, too many searches, too much credit aleady etc.0

The best thing to do would be to obtain your credit reports first, and if there isn't any negative entries in them, you might want to contact Barclays to appeal against their decision. Cheers and all the best!I know nothing0
