During fitting of new meters we were referred to Cadent due to fact our gas meter was in garage and main feed pipe is plastic. Engineer came and said new regs say have to be on outside but no charge to us. 2nd engineer came today for more thorough survey. Again I was told no charge. Cadent rang later to say we will have to pay. We have not asked for meter to be moved. I said we were told no charge. They said it is because we built over pipe. Extension is 15yrs old. Annoyed we are being told we have to pay when told we didnt have to

I understand this is a regular occurance now.
Basically loads of people are building over services, when they shouldnt....so why should Cadent (and by default every customer whos gas passes through Cadents pipes) have to pay for a service to be moved because someone has built over it?
Sadly if you've not been at the property for fifteen years then you might have to foot the bill for the previous owners. If you built the extension, you were probably told by the builder that it would be ok0 -
There is a risk assessment process for this . Dont quote me but it is my understanding that if the pipe is steel and it has been built over then it will have to be renewed in plastic at the homeowners expense. If the service is plastic(PE) then following a risk assessment process, the majority of these can be left in place.Have you had a suitably trained Cadent person to carry out the built over service risk assessment? This could have been the second person? If i were you i would ask if you have been subjected to the built over risk assessment procedure and if so, why has your service failed as it is PE? Is any part of the service now contained within a cavity?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I really want it moved into a box on the outside of the exact same bit of wall to free up some space for a kitchen refurb. I've been putting off the request because I expect it to be expensive, but if theres a possibility they'll move it for free under new rules I'll have to get onto them.

Cemetary, did you have the extension built, if not can you prove it? If so they you shouldn't have to pay. If you did then cough up, it is not a new rule. The built over service rule has existed for longer than 15 years.
Raxiel, your gas meter will be supplied on plastic to the point of entry where it will be steel wrapped in PE pipe as its sleeve for passing through the wall.0
