Why don't you ring up and speak to Stepchange? They may be able to reassure you more.

You must cancel all direct debits to creditors except house related ones. Then (as I wrote a few days ago) get the letter from this site saying that you are offering £1 per month and are going to make a plan as your debts are unaffordable and explain the situation briefly.

You need to act now - you can sort this out.

You can do this for as long as you need to - a year or more while you sort yourself out, get an emergency fund sorted out etc

No they won't and can't take you to court so don't worry about that but you need to act now.

I know you are scared but doing nothing when you can do something is the worst thing you can do.

Nothing happens really, a judge decides you owe the money, you pay monthly at a rate you can afford, its nothing to worry about, you don`t normally go to court, its all done by post and online, really its not worth even thinking of.

Creditors can use the threat like some kind of big stick to whack you with, when in reality, its nothing at all to fear.

You are concentrating on the negative aspects of owing money, instead of taking positive steps to sorting out the problem, please do some research on what creditors can and cannot do, how long the debt collection process can actually take, and if you require breathing space, just tell them you don`t want to be contacted for two/three months, take some time to go through your options, the world does not stop spinning because you fail to pay your debts, please get some advice from one of the free debt charities.

The first letter you send to all your creditors is a 'holding letter'.  It would request that your creditors put a temporary freeze on your accounts, whilst you seek advice.  I recommend using the letter linked below.  You could change up the 30 day holding period to 60 days instead.  :)

Having your accounts on hold will give you the 'breathing space' you need in order to develop your doable debt-busting plan.  :)

Yes, once you are not making the payments that you are contracted to then court is a possibility.
